Quartet Not Replacing Wolfensohn
15:51 May 03, '06 / 5 Iyar 5766

The Quartet has decided not to replace Middle East envoy James Wolfensohn so long as Hamas is not ready to compromise with Israel, the American government said.

Wolfensohn has quit working for the Quartet, made up of the United Nations, the United States, Russia and the European Union. American Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that if conditions in the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority (PA) were better, "a special envoy could really do his work" and Wolfensohn would not have quit. However, he has stated that one reason he is leaving is because of his opposition to a freeze on funds to the Hams-led Palestinian Authority (PA).
